Ed Martin had the unenviable task of replacing legendary G.W. Head Coach Alger Pugh. All he did since then was win. win, and win. After a shaky first couple of years, Martin got G.W. back into the playoffs in 1988. In 1994 and 1996, he got the Eagles into the state championship game, where they lost in a couple of heartbreakers.

In 1995, Coach Martin suffered a heart attack the week of the season opener. He underwent bypass surgery, but was back on the sidelines a few weeks later, to watch his team drub William Fleming in Roanoke 59-0.
