Out
of necessity, G.W. had to combine Senior Night and homecoming festivies
in their regular-season home final against the Tunstall Trojans. It
made for a long night at the stadium, but no Eagles were complaining.
G.W. overwhelmed the visitors from Dry Fork, pounding out a 57-20 win.
The Trojans drew first blood, opening the game with a successful onside
kick. After several Eagle penalties the Trojans were in the end zone on
a nifty touchdown pass, taking a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles had plenty with which to answer. They ripped off touchdowns
on their next four possessions to take a 29-7 lead. The Trojans scored
late in the first half, but the Eagles had just enough time to score
touchdown #5 to take a 36-14 lead into the break.
The Trojans did a masterful job of ball possession in the third
quarter. Between getting the kickoff and recovering another onside
kick, they held the ball for nearly eight minutes. When the Eagles got
the ball, it had been just over an hour (real time) since they had
snapped the football. They made up for lost time on the first play with
this incredible run.
Tunstall added a fourth quarter score, but the Eagles had two touchdowns in the final frame to spur a running clock.
It was easily the Eagles' best offensive output of the regular season.
