In
a wild game that featured two special teams scores and two defensive
touchdowns, most of the big plays belonged to the GW Eagles. They used
a stellar rushing performance from a senior back to knock off the
Amherst County Lancers 53-27 at JT Christopher Stadium.
Stanford Lipscomb scored his first touchdown on the sixth play of the
opening drive, putting G.W. up 6-0. But the Lancers stormed back. A
fourth-down scramble created an 18-yard touchdown and Amherst took a
7-6 lead. On G.W.'s next possession, a poor spot put them into a fourth
and one. After a turnover on downs the Lancers popped a 55-yard scoring
pass to take a 14-6 lead.
The Eagles wasted no time responding.
Lipscomb added his second touchdown to give the Eagles the lead. They
stretched the lead on a touchdown catch and two-point conversion by
Dalleon Johnson to make it 26-14 Eagles. Lipscomb then stretched the lead again.
But Amherst had an answer. They returned the subsequent kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to make it 32-21 Eagles at the half.
Lipscomb's fourth touchdown of the night put the Eagles up 39-21. Then
the defense got into the act. Naz Wilson executed a 53-yard pick-six to
make it 45-21 G.W.
Amherst had another touchdown in their system. But so did G.W.'s defense.
