The
G.W. Eagles used a second-half explosion to turn a decisive lead into a
rout. The Eagles scored on their first four possessions and never
looked back, dropping the Mecklenburg County Phoenix 64-10 to secure
their third district win in a row, and their seventh consecutive
overall.
The Phoenix roared out of the gate, using a strong running game to set
up an early field goal. But the Eagles answered on their next
four possessions, two by air and two on the
ground. A questionable pair of calls set Mecklenburg up for a late
first-half score to make it 29-10 at the break.
The Eagles stormed out of the gate in the second half. They scored a
touchdown, then took advantage of two consecutive kickoffs that the
Phoenix failed to field. They scored three touchdowns
before the Phoenix could manage a second-half snap, making it a 51-10
game, and sparking a running clock and a very rapid rest of the game.
