G.W. 27 William Fleming 16
Second Half Comeback III!
The
G.W. Eagles are making second half comebacks routine. For the
third week in a row the Eagles fell behind early, but stormed back in
the second half, riding a stingy defense and a stubborn running game to
a win against a good football team.
This time the Eagles turned the trick on the road, ousting the William Fleming Colonels 27-16 in Roanoke.
G.W. used special teams to set up their first score. Tony Matos
blocked a punt in the end zone that was recovered on the three.
Alex Brandon scored on the next play to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead four
minutes into the game.
The Colonels answered with a 20-yard scramble from quarterback Jycer
Preston to even it up 7-7. They took the lead early in the second when
they tackled an Eagle rusher in the end zone to make it a 9-7 game.
The Eagles had an answer. Stanford Lipscomb ripped off a 41-yard
touchdown run two minutes later to give the Eagles the lead again. But
Fleming grabbed the lead back just before halftime, thanks to another
scramble from Preston. The Colonels carried a 16-13 lead into the break.
The second half was motsly a defensive struggle. Neither team
came close to scoring in the third. The Eagles stayed committed
to the running game and it finally paid off. Lipscomb squirted into the
end zone from eight yards out to put the Eagles up 20-16 with
three-and-a-half minutes left in the game.
The Eagles defense forced a fumble, but a three-and-out on offense gave
the ball back to Fleming on their 39 with a minute left. The
Colonels managed two first downs. But the defensive pressure
finally paid off as the Eagles picked off their first pass of the year
and made it count!
