It
was a see-saw affair that saw four field goals, two safeties and five
lead changes...and VERY nearly a miracle comeback. In the end, the G.W.
Eagles had just enough to outlast the Lord Botetourt Cavaliers, holding
on for a 34-31 win at J.T. Christopher Stadium!
After a scoreless first quarter the Eagles scored first on a 41-yard
field goal by Cam Stephens. Minutes later, Stephens stepped out of the
end zone on a punt attempt, making the score 3-2. Botetourt found
a passing game, scoring on a 40-yard strike to take an 8-3 lead.
Another Stephens field goal got G.W. within two. Then, with 45 seconds left in the first half, the Eagles took the lead on a long run from Alex Brandon!
In the second half, the Cavaliers moved to within two points on another
safety, this time on an intentional grounding call in the end zone.
They later took the lead on a 29-yard field goal. The Eagles wrested
the lead back three minutes later on Brandon's second touchdown run.
Another field goal put the Cavaliers within four. An Eagles
fumble gave Botetourt the ball deep in G.W. territory. That's
when G.W.'s defense turned the game on its ear!
Another touchdown put the Eagles up 34-16 with eight minutes
left. But Lord Botetourt refused to quit. They scored with 2:10
left to make it 34-24. After recovering an onside kick, the
Cavaliers scored on their first play to make it 34-31 with just over
two minutes left in the ball game! The Eagles managed to recover
the onside kick and ran out the clock for their third straight win!
