District Champs!
It
was far from a masterpiece, but the G.W. Eagles claimed the 2024
Piedmont District championship in convincing fashion Friday, going on a
road to rout a solid football team on their home turf. Despite an
uncharacteristic three turnovers and some last-minute defensive lapses,
the Eagles held on for a 46-to-27 win over the Phoenix.
The Eagles got up by two touchdowns early in the second quarter, but
the Phoenix scored on a 75-yard TD pass to get to within a score.
That's when Neo Cabell took matters into his own hands---or legs, as it were.
But on the Eagles' next possession the first of their three lost
fumbles would be picked up and scored by Mecklenburg to make it a
one-score game again. Kaliq Hairston though scored a touchdown late in
the half to send the Eagles into the locker room with a 26-13 lead.
The Eagles looked to break the game open in the second half, scoring on three possessions, including an incredible run by Hairston to put them up 46-13!
Two late Mecklenburg touchdowns made the score look closer than the game actually was.
The Eagles have now won eight in a row, and clinch the Piedmont District title.
