A fine season comes to a familiar end

The G.W. Eagles matched up physically with the Salem Spartans, but two big running plays and a defensive pick-six led to a familiar scenario as the Eagles saw their season end against Salem in a 24-3 game in the Region D semifinals at J.T. Christopher Stadium in Danville.

Over the first 15 minutes of the game, the Eagles ground out a couple of good drives into Salem territory.  But the Spartans' red zone defense held the Eagles to just three points.  Cam Stephens' 35 yard field goal gave the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.

But it lasted only 15 seconds. Salem switched to a Power-I formation and popped a 72-yard touchdown on the first play of their next possession to take a 7-3 lead.  On their next possession, they ran the same play in from 65 yards out to stretch their lead to 14-3.

In the second half Salem added a field goal, and scored on a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown.  G.W. managed 17 first downs, but four turnovers kept them off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.
