Breaking Glass, Part Deux!

The GW Eagles used grit, determination, a stubborn running game and a shut-down defense to outlast the E.C. Glass Hilltoppers 24-7 in the first round of the Division 4 Region D playoffs.

The game started out as a defensive struggle with each team trading possessions.  Senior QB Neo Cabell broke the gooseegg late in the first quarter to put the Eagles up 7-0.  Early in the second quarter, kicker Cam Stephens booted a 30-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead.

Midway through the second, coach Nick Anderson rolled the dice on a fourth down from the Glass 37.  Cabell used some tremendous blocking to make sure the gamble paid off.

But Glass wasn't done. They hit a screen pass with three minutes left in the first half and ran it in from 58 yards to make it 17-7.  On the final play of the first half, Glass almost scored a backbreaking touchdown.  But Josh White tackled the receiver short of the end zone to keep the deficit at ten.

The defensive struggle continued in the second half.  G.W.'s first possession lasted eight minutes but they couldn't turn it into points. The score remained 17-7 going into the fourth quarter.  That's when the Eagles running game finally hit a big one.  Kaliq scored on the next play to make the final 24-7.

Next up, round two of the playoffs at home against the Salem Spartans.
