Sept. 1, 2023 --- Amherst Co. 26
G.W. 20
Another
frustrating loss
The G.W. Eagles dominated every statistical
category against Amherst County in their Friday night showdown, with
one notable exception. Losing the turnover battle doomed the
Eagles to a 26-20 road loss to the Lancers.
The Eagles opened the scoring on their first drive of the game.
After holding the Lancers to a three-and-out, the Eagles used the legs
of quarterback Nehemiah Cabell to move the ball down the field.
Cabell put the Eagles on the board with a one-yard plunge to give them
a 6-0 lead.
The Eagles scored again on their third drive. A long read option
run by Cabell set up a three-yard scoring run by Bridges to put the
Eagles up 12-0 with five minutes left in the first half.
The Lancers' offense began to get moving. Gary Liggons scored from five
yards out to make it 12-7 with just under a minute-and-a-half left in
the second quarter. G.W. fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, giving
the Lancers great field position. They took advantage, scoring on
a one-yard run to go up 13-12 at the half.
The Eagles opened the second half with a long drive into Lancer
territory. But Amherst's Devonte Wade picked off a fourth down
pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown, giving the Lancers a
20-12 lead.
The Eagles quickly responded. Cabell led them on a three-minute
drive, scoring from three yards out. Cabell found Drake Lynsky
for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 20-20.
The Eagles defense kept the Lancers off of the scoreboard, giving the
offense a chance to re-take the lead. But a dropped pass turned
into an interception, setting the Lancers up for a go-ahead touchdown
with four-and-a-half minutes left. The Eagles blocked the extra
point, making it a 26-20 Amherst lead.
The Eagles offense put together a steady drive, getting inside the
Lancer 20. But another dropped pass was picked off, allowing the
Lancers to run out the clock.
