Aug. 25, 2022 --- Dinwiddie 52 G.W. 7
Humbling
season-opening loss
The
good news was the G.W. Eagles returned to J.T. Christopher Stadium for the
first time in two years Friday to open their 2023 football season. The bad news was they were playing against the
defending state champions who are odds-on favorites to repeat this year.
The Dinwiddie
Generals took advantage of early GW miscues to build an early lead, and scored
the game’s first 52 points, en route to a 52-7 drubbing of the Eagles.
The
Eagles defense forced a third-and-long on Dinwiddie’s first drive. But a swing pass with a missed tackle turned
into a 70-yard touchdown play to put the Generals up 7-0 a little more than a
minute into the game. On the
Eagles’ first possession they converted two third-and-longs. But sprinkled with
a slew of dropped passes, the Eagles once again got behind the chains on third
down. Junior Quarterback Neo Cabell was
hit as he threw the pass. The Generals picked it up and returned it 50 yards
for a touchdown to go up 14-0.
Dinwiddie’s
defense stymied the Eagles for the rest of the first half. This gave the Generals ideal field position and
they took full advantage. Junior
Dinwiddie quarterback Harry Dalton, an Alabama commit who has already been
named all-state twice, scored touchdowns on the next three possessions. The Generals added a 38-yard field goal, and
a 50-yard scoring pass from Dalton to take a commanding 45-0 lead into the
half.
In the
second half, the Eagles suffered another interception, setting Dalton up for his
third passing touchdown of the night, putting the Generals up 52-0.
G.W.
got their only score on the subsequent kickoff return. Junior Jaden Glen fielded the kick on the ten
yard line. He outran the coverage to the left and scored on a 90-yard
return. Cam Stephens hit the extra point
and the game was 52-7.
