Sweet season ends on a sour note

For the third straight seasons, the GW Eagles season was ended by the premiere football program in Virginia.  The Salem Spartans used a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense to oust the Eagles, 48-14, in the Region D Class 4 Championship game at Salem Stadium

The Eagles had a promising opening drive, with quarterback Jeb Byrnes completing his first five passes.  But the drive ended on downs at the Salem 15.  The Spartans scored on an 81-yard QB scramble on their first possession and took a lead they never relinquished.  The Spartans added another late first quarter TD to push their lead to 13-0.

The Eagles got on the board thanks to a Salem mistake.  Jakobe Dixon hit an exceptional punt that was downed on the Salem one.  The Spartans then fumbled a snap.  Caveon Wilson jumped on the loose ball to score his first career touchdown, and GW cut the deficit to 13-7.  But Salem added another score to take a 20-7 lead.  Late in the first half, Donovan Howard picked off a Salem pass and ran it all the way to the run.  But the Eagles could not get that elusive final yard, and the first half ended with Salem on top, 20-7.

The Spartans struck first in the second half to go up by three touchdowns.  Then GW's offense finally found some daylight!  Unfortunately, the Spartans scored 90 seconds later to re-establish their lead.  They added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 48-14.
