Belated season-opening loss

The GW Eagles opened their 2021 season three weeks late, against a good team that aleady had two games under their belt.  That experienced gap showed as E.C. Glass used special teams to knock off the G.W. Eagles in a shootout, 42-32.

The Eagles also went into the game without their starting quarterback Jes Byrnes.  But moving the ball was not an issue as G.W. racked up 436 yards and put 32 points on the board.  They struggled defensively, but managed to get two big interceptions and a late-game sack to help the effort.

Special teams was the literal difference in the score.  Glass scored six thouchdowns and made all of their extra points.  G.W. scored five touchdowns and made only one conversion.   The final score that sealed the game also came via special teams.  For the first time in 8 years, G.W. had a punt blocked.  For the first time in 13 years, they had a punt block returned for a touchdown.  That was the last score in the ball game,

The loss overshadowed an outstanding effort from emergency quarterbacks Donovan Howard and Freshman Nehemiah Cabell.  They comined to throw for 218 yards and three touchdowns.  Wide Receiver Omari Hairston had a career night, catching three passes for 152 yards and two scores.  Jakoe Dixon also scored twice.
