Road Survival!
The
GW Eagles survived a scare from an upset-minded Bassett Bengals team.
They used a strong first-half finish and a gutsy closing drive to
escape Bassett with a 42-28 win.
Bassett
made their game plan clear on the opening drive. The Bengals stacked the middle of the line
and ran the ball, making sure on each play they used as much of the play clock
as possible. They got three first downs
and burned nearly seven-and-a-half minutes off of the clock, but they ended up
having to punt. The Eagles used a long pass
to make it 7-0. Bassett evened the score, but the Eagles went on
a late first-half scoring binge, getting three touchdowns in the final
three minutes. The last came with 8.6 seconds on another Shakobe to Shawn hook up.
The
Bengals recovered an on-side kick to open the second half. They
scored to pull to within two touchdowns. After forcing an Eagle
punt, Bassett looked to pull even closer, but the Eagles scored on a
spectacular strip and sprint.
Despite
the 35-14 lead, Bassett wouldn't give up. They scored two fourth
quarter touchdowns to pull to within a score. Getting the ball
with six minutes left, the Eagles put together a super drive ending in
a Willie Edmunds touchdown, icing the win.
