The
GW Eagles re-wrote the record books as they held off a pesky Halifax
County team, taking a 62-27 Homecoming win at JT Christopher Stadium.
Entering
the game, Senior tailback Wesley Graves was one touchdown shy of David
Wilson's all-time record of 59 career scores. He wasted no time.
Graves scored on the fifth play of the game to make it 7-0 GW.
Then, he scored on the first play of the Eagles' next possession
from 77 yards out to break the record.
Despite the quick 14-0
lead, the Comets stormed back with two touchdowns. They were down
21-14 with the ball late in the first half. But a young
linebacker made a big play to give the Eagles the ball back. Four plays later, with one chance to get into the end zone, the Eagles cashed in.
The Eagles extended their two-touchdown lead with a long pass play in the third quarter. Late in the third, the Eagles used their defense to put the game away.
Graves
ended up with 257 yards and five touchdowns on 16 carries. He now
has 27 touchdowns on the season. The single-season touchdown
record is also held by David Wilson with 39 scores in 2008.

Shawn Watlington picked off this pass and ran it back 95 yards for a touchdown!
