An epic comeback attempt falls short

On
the road against a perrenial state powerhouse, the GW Eagles found
themselves down 45-20 early in the Fourth Quarter. But a funny
thing happened on the way to the blowout. The Eagles offense came
alive and their defense made some plays. After three scores, the
Eagles found themselves down by three, but they had the ball.
However, their final drive was stalled deep in their own
territory. What would have been a comeback for the history books
fell just short.
The Eagles opened the game in a new flexbone
offense. Unfortunately, they fumbled on their first play from
scrimmage, setting up Dinwiddie's first touchdown. But the Eagles
tied the score on thier first play...a long touchdown run from Shawn
Watlington. On the ensuing kickoff, Dinwddie re-took the lead on
a 90-yard return. But the Eagles needed just one play to tie the score AGAIN!
Dinwiddie
scored ten straight points to take a 24-14 lead into the half.
They scored early in the third quarter to go up 31-14. But
the Eagles dipped into their bag of tricks. Shawn Watlington ran
in a fake punt from 60 yards out to make it 31-20!
But
the Dinwiddie machine rolled on. Two more touchdowns put them up
45-20 early in the Fourth Quarter, as they threatened to run away with
things. But GW shifted into fourth gear. They started with
a long pass play. Three minutes
later Wesley Graves scored to make it 45-34. Then after another
defensive stop, Graves scored again to make it 45-42 with 3:38 left!
Dinwiddie threw a deep interception with a minute left to give
the Eagles one last chance. Unfortunately, the drive got stalled
and the game ended.
