Week 10

The GW Eagles found a way to win on a day when their offense was mostly stuck in neutral. The Eagles used a solid defense and some late-game heroics to hold off an upset-minded Halifax County team, 15-6!

The Eagles went three-and-out on their first posession, giving the Comets the ball at midfield. The Comets scored five plays later to take a 6-0 lead. The Eagles defense stiffed and held the Comets to only 16 yards the rest of the first half. But the GW offense could never get on track. They went into the break trailing 6-0.

In the second half, it was more of the same. The Eagles were able to get a few first downs, but couldn't finish a drive. The defense kept the Comets out of the end zone, and the game remained 6-0. That is, until Carl Poole entered the equation. Kendrell McClary found his way into the end zone for a two-point conversion, giving the Eagles an 8-6 lead with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter.

The back-and-forth affair continued into the fourth. Halifax got the ball with three minutes left and started a drive. But the Eagle defense closed the door with a defense that turned offensive!

The win gives the Eagles an 8-2 regular season record and their second consecutive Piedmont District championship! It also gives them a #4 seed in the 4D playoffs. They'll open at home next week against 7-3 Pulaski County.
