For the second year in a row, the GW Eagles opened their campaign against the Athens Drive Jaguars. Unlike last year, the Eagles had to work for this one, but still came out on top 34-19.
For the first 18 minutes, the Eagles could do no wrong. They opened the game with the ball, and scored eight plays later!
Later in the first quarter, the Eagles would go to the air to take a two score lead!
Curtis Waller scored his first high-school touchdown to put the Eagles up 20-0 midway through the second! But Athens Drive returned the subsequent kickoff for a score---the first time the Eagles had allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown in four years. That made it 20-6 at the half.
Late in the third quarter, Athens Drive used a punishing running game to score another touchdown and make it a one-possession game. The GW offense answered two plays later.
If there were any doubts left, Kuashawn Forest eliminated them early in the fourth quarter, scoring his third touchdown of the night!
Forest ended up with 224 yards, giving GW their first 200-yard single-game rushing performance since DJ Benion in 2009. The Eagles racked up 322 yards on the ground overall.
Next week, the Eagles go South of the Border to take on the powerful Cougars of Vance High School in Charlotte.
The Eagles open the
2016 season!
