Oct. 9, 2015 --- G.W. 78 Patrick Co. 0
Records are made to be broken!!
After a lackluster performance on Monday, GW Head Coach Nick Anderson promised the effort and execution *would* improve during Friday night's game against Patrick County. Mission accomplished.
Behind one of the most extraordinary individual performances we've seen in our years calling games for the Eagles, GW overwhelmed the outmatched Patrick County Cougars 78-0!
Kuashaun Forest and Jamil Griffin had impressive touchdown runs. Sam Branch hit Maleek Henderson on a long touchdown pass. Donald Smith had a run after a short catch that defied description. On defense, John Stevens and Curtis Brooks led an effort that allowed a mere 42 total yards of offense. On special teams, Isaiah Guzman blasted a would-be tackler into oblivion on a two-point conversion run.
But the night belonged to CJ Graves. He took advantage of an injury to starter Tim Glass to score two short touchdowns quarterbacking the Eagles "Stampede" short-yardage formation. He also had TD runs from 8, 22 and 9 yards out. Five rushing touchdowns would have been enough for an epic night. But there was more. MUCH more.
CJ Graves returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown in the first half, the first kick return for a score this year. The next time he fielded a punt, he put on a move that much have appeared like an optical illusion to Patrick County. The next punt return---another touchdown! He had another long return called back on a penalty!
According to the on-line record from the National Federation of State High School Associations; the national governing body for high school sports, only three players in the recorded history of high school football have recorded more punt returns for a touchdown in a game than G.W.'s C.J. Graves. Just four other players have scored three in a game!!!
