Season-opening shutout!!
For the second year in a row, the GW Eagles opened their season with a shutout win over a North Carolina school. This time, it was a 60-0 blowout win over the Jaguars of Athens Drive High School in Raleigh.
The Eagles defense made an early statement, picking off passes in Athens Drive's first three possessions. The second pick from Tim Glass seemed destined to be returned for a touchdown---but an inadvertent whistle gave the Eagles the ball at the 28. No problem for Jamil Griffin. The most impressive return of the night? No question. 305-pound Defensive Tackle Anthony Long rumbled downfield 65 yards to score his first high school touchdown. The Eagles closed out the first half with a pair of passing touchdowns by Sam Branch; including a 23-yard strike to Curtis Brooks, and a thirty-yard super catch-and-run by Donald Smith.
The second half was all GW. They threw only one pass while compiling 205 second-half rushing yards. That included a 100-yard, two-touchdown effort from Brione Towler!
