A super season comes to a close!
The Eagles take the field at Salem Stadium!
It was a clash of the titans as the 12-0 G.W. Eagles took on the 12-0 Salem Spartans in a state quarterfinal game in front of a packed house at Salem Stadium. Salem scored on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead; but the Eagles answered on their next drive with a one-yard run from Hunter Byrnes to tie it up at seven!
The Spartans continued to flex their muscle on the ground, getting a second and third score from Fullback Alex Ramsey to jump out to a 21-7 lead. But the Eagles answered on a special teams play to change the field position. Then, a super run by Byrnes allowed GW to pull to within a score. But a late Salem touchdown sent the Spartans into the break with a 28-14 edge.
In the second half, the Eagles' defense got into the act on Salem's first possession, picking them off on a screen pass. That set up a long-distance connection to make it 28-21! After forcing a Salem punt, the Eagles began a promising drive that ended in a fumble. That set up a Salem score to make it 35-21.
The wheels came off after that. Ramsey returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown, then followed that with ANOTHER rushing touchdown. GW got a final score with three minutes left, but it wasn't enough. They close 2014 with an outstanding 12-1 record---and lots of firepower returning next year.
