Playoff-opening blowout!
The GW Eagles opened the 2014 playoff by setting a school record for points scored in a post-season game. The Eagles built up a big first-half lead, held off a Falcon third-quarter comeback, and closed the game with three touchdowns to claim a 63-21 win over Fauquier County.
For the eighth time in eleven games, the Eagles scored on their opening possession---they needed only four plays to find the end zone. Later in the first quarter, GW got an outstanding individual effort from a receiver to take a two-score lead. Late in the first half, GW's senior pitch-and-catch duo hooked up for the second time to make it 28-7. A final first-half touchdown put the Eagles up 35-7 at the break.
But the Falcons mounted an impressive comeback. They scored twice in the third quarter to cut the Eagles' lead to 42-21. But GW put the game away with C.J. Graves' second TD with five-and-a-half minutes to go. They later tacked on another for good measure---and one more for the road, courtesy of the defense!
GW advances to the second round of the playoffs for the second year in a row. For the second year in a row, their opponent is Courtland. This year's edition will be played in Danville.
