Homecoming Heartbreaker
The G.W. Eagles stormed out to a 21-0 first half lead, but a spirited comeback by the Magna Vista Warriors spoiled Homecoming-2013 before a large crowd at Christopher Stadium. The Eagles used an athletic return on defense to open the scoring late in the first half. They dialed up some razzle-dazzle to score in the first play of the second quarter. Two minutes later, the Eagles were in the end zone again---after a super set-up run---and took a three-touchdown lead. But just before Halftime, the Warriors capped a drive with a touchdown to make the score 21-7.
In the second half, it got weird. The Warriors scored on their second possession to make it 21-14. But the Eagles answered with an 8-play, 80-yard drive to stretch the lead to two scores. Magna Vista moved it downfield, but the Eagles defense held on a fourth-and-goal early in the fourth quarter. Back up to their own goal line, the Warriors tackled the Eagles in the end zone for a safety to make it 28-16. On their next drive, the Warriors were aided MIGHTILY by two GW "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" penalties to keep their drive alive. They scored at the 9:09 mark to make it 28-23. The Eagles couldn't move the ball and had to punt. Magna Vista got the ball back with five minutes left, but a Malik Clements interception gave GW the ball back. Still unable to do anything on offense, the Eagles had to punt again. Magna Vista put together a great drive, scoring with :30 sec. left to win 29-28.
