Dec. 4th, 1996 (State Semifinals)
G.W. 10 -- Indian River 7
This was a clash of the titans. A hulking 1950's-era stadium at Great Bridge Middle School was the scene of an unseaonably warm Saturday afternoon in December as these two regional champions did battle. Both teams traded touchdowns in the first half, G.W's coming on a pass from Nathan Poole to Tyrone Robertson. The game was tied 7-7 at the half. In the second, G.W. moved the ball well, but fumbles and untimely penalties kept them out of the end zone. Finally, with less than 2:00 left, G.W. got the ball and embarked on a furious drive. Key runs by Theomone Brooks and Kieth Terry would get the Eagles to the Braves' 15 yard line with :06 second left.
That set the stage for the most dramatic field goal in G.W.'s playoff history. Jacob Scism lined up for the game-winner. The snap was down, the kick was on the way... | |
