Week 12

The GW Eagles could do little wrong in the first half...and little right in the second half. But their ability to make their conversions, coupled with a late defensive stand, lifted them to a 29-26 win over the visiting Courtland Cougars---avenging last year's loss in the second round of the playoffs.

For the tenth time in 12 games, the Eagles scored on their opening possession, capped with a short run by Hunter Byrnes behind the Stampede formation! Later in the first quarter, Hunter hooked up with Malik Clements for the 12th time this year to stretch the lead to 14-0. Late in the first quarter, the Eagles scored again, with Isaiah Guzman making a great imrov play on a low snap to get a two-point conversion. That would be huge.

In the second quarter, Courtland scored, but the Eagles answered on their next possession to take a 29-7 lead into the break.

The second half was all Courtland. Their vaunted Wing-T rushing attack kicked into high gear, while the Eagles suddenly began having trouble moving the ball. The Cougars scored midway through the third, but failed on their conversion to keep the Eagle lead at 16. Late in the third, they scored again; but failed on their two-point attempt to keep the lead at ten. With five-and-a-half minutes left, Courtland scored yet again. They opted for the extra point to make it a three-point game.

The Eagles got the ball back and ran a couple of minutes off of the clock. Then, in a must-pass situation, the Eagles sealed the deal with their Senior Free Safety picking off a pass!

The Eagles advance to the State Quarterfinals this coming Saturday with their first-ever trip to Salem to take on the 12-0 Spartans!
