Nov. 9, 2001 --- G.W. 14 Cave Spring 13

A "Special" win!

G.W. players look on during a halftime dedication ceremony for a
memorial honoring Alger Pugh, Sonny Wall, and Eddie Martin

Memorial to Coaches Pugh, Wall, and Martin

G.W. used four special teams plays and two fourth-down touchdown passes to claim their third straight district championship---and the first-ever district title in the Western Valley District.  Cave Spring got an early 7-0 lead, but G.W. recovered a muffed punt, then converted on fourth down to tie the game.  Cave Spring scored again, but G.W. blocked the extra point to make it 13-7.  Late in the first half, another fourth-down pass got G.W. into the end zone.  Berkeley Furgurson made the extra point to give the Eagles a 14-13 lead.  In the second half, Cave Spring missed a 50-yard Field Goal, but a penalty on G.W. set up a 45-yard attempt.  Chris McDuffie blocked it to preserve the lead. With 2:00 left, Cave Spring lined up for a game-winning 25-yard Field Goal.  It was NO GOOD! G.W. wins 14-13!!!
